audit

Role: CRO audit, UX audit

My key tasks: Usability testing, heuristic evalution, funcionality testing, website performance

Timeline: Jan 2025
An introduction
1.About the project
Cover Me is a mobile app that allows fitness teachers to find cover for their classes. I was responsible for a CRO audit that combines heuristic evaluation, functionality testing and website performance.

As an active user of Cover Me app, I’ve had the opportunity to deeply engage with its interface, features, and overall user flow. This hands-on experience has provided invaluable insights into areas where the app excels and where improvements could be made to enhance user satisfaction and conversion rates.
The problem
Fitness teachers need to find a cover instructor when they are sick or go on holidays.
As a recently created app Cover Me app has some functionalities that need to be reassessed.

The project goal
The goal is to carry out a CRO audit of the app to obtain information about accessibility, functionality and performance in order to improve user experience.
2.Research and Audit process.
What are the most important areas to focus on this CRO audit?
Since this app is relatively knew I would like to focus on areas like usability testing, functionality and website performance.
- Usability testing: identifying key user experience issues and providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
- Functionality testing: verifying that the application or system behaves as expected, ensuring all features and functions work correctly according to requirements.
- Website performance: Performed a thorough website performance audit, analyzing speed, responsiveness, and overall user experience to deliver actionable insights for optimization.

3. Findings and recommendations
What are the main usability issues and pain points found on the app?
3.1. UX performance:
I conducted a comprehensive evaluation of all screens, buttons, and features to ensure proper functionality. During this process, I identified several issues, including non-functional buttons, unclear iconography, and inconsistencies within the design system that deviate from established guidelines.
I created a Figma file where I uploaded all screens and I added all the issues I was encountering to create possible solutions.
I divided the screens based on top navigation, low navigation and main body.
3.2. SEO performance:
I utilized Screaming Frog to conduct a thorough SEO analysis and generate a detailed report outlining key performance metrics related to the website’s search engine optimization.

3. Findings and recommendations

3.1. UX Findings
A. Some issues found on main home screen are pin pointed:
- Non - functional buttons
- Evaluate hierarchy of some sections
- Confusion with some icons.

B. Some issues were encountered on this screen:
- Consider to eliminate some features like a limited time to apply for a job
- Certain icons are non-interactive and lack clear contextual meaning, making them difficult to interpret.

C. Some issues were encountered on this screen:
- Screen doesn't follow UI design system guidelines
- Iterate the relevance of this screen within the app

3.2. SEO performance
- I have run a SEO audit using ScreamFrog and these are the results. The website is doing great in terms of SEO, Mobile and Security but it has issues in terms of Performance. On the first three images you could see the proposed changes to improve website performance.

4. Outcome
4.1. Team feedback
The feedback from the team was highly constructive and reinforced the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration. They appreciated the clarity of my findings and how my recommendations aligned with both user needs and business goals. The team was particularly supportive of the proposed design improvements and the actionable SEO optimizations, recognizing their potential to enhance both user engagement and search engine visibility

5. Problems encountered and lessons learned
5.1. Limited access to data
Throughout the audit process, I didn't have access to some important data so I couldn't use tools like Google Analytics or Hotjar. I had to lean onto other programs like Screaming Frog, Chat GPT and manual user research to gather important data.
Lesson learned: Next time I will try and speak to the client to convince them of the importance to have access to their analytics in order to have more accurate and actionable results.
5.2. Clients push- back
Some usability issues I identified were seen as low-priority by stakeholders, even though they impacted user flow.
Lesson learned: I realized I need to connect UX issues to topics that clients really care about—like conversion, retention, or user satisfaction.
5.2. Too much scope
It was tempting to review every part of the app, but that led to diluted insights.
Lesson learned: I learned to stop trying to fix the whole app in one go and just focus on the details that actually matters most to the user.
5.4. Identifying Problems without Clear Solutions
In the beginning, I flagged a lot of UX issues without offering clear, actionable design recommendations
Lesson learned: Pointing out problems is easy—offering smart, doable fixes? That’s where the real work (and fun) is.
5.5. Difficulty Prioritizing Issues
I presented too many issues at once, making it hard for the client to know where to start.
Lesson learned: “I overwhelmed the team with too much at once—next time I’ll keep it simple and prioritize the biggest wins first.”

Roadmap
I will maintain continuous communication with the app team to ensure they have all necessary information regarding the UX audit findings and any additional requirements. I will remain available to clarify any queries, provide further insights, or support in the integration of UX recommendations as needed
